Alleged Terror Plot: DSS Orders Heightened Vigilance in Osun

Muslim and Christian leaders in Osun State have confirmed receiving a security briefing from the Department of State Services over an alleged terrorist threat to public gathering centres.

The DSS reportedly held separate meetings with representatives of the two religious communities in Osogbo on September 9.

The briefings focused on intelligence concerning an alleged plan to spread insecurity to the South-West ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the information shared with the religious leaders, worship centres and other locations where large numbers of people gather could be targeted.

The President of the Osun State Muslim Community, Mustapha Olawuyi, confirmed the meeting with DSS officials.

He said the security agency advised Muslim leaders to take precautionary measures and remain vigilant.

Olawuyi said the warning was particularly important because mosques and other religious centres regularly attract large gatherings.

He said Muslim leaders had been encouraged to communicate the security advice to members of their communities.

Christian leaders received a similar warning.

The Chairman of Osun CAN, Pastor John Adeleke, confirmed that the DSS had met with Christian representatives.

Adeleke said churches were asked to strengthen their security awareness and pay attention to people and vehicles around their premises.

The warning was subsequently circulated among CAN blocs and other Christian platforms.

According to an account of the Christian meeting, the alleged targets could include churches, mosques, markets, schools, clubs and viewing centres.

The DSS reportedly told the Christian leaders that intelligence indicated Osun had been mapped as part of a wider plan.

Reports also indicated that the suspected attackers could move through northern states before reaching the South-West.

However, no specific terrorist group has been publicly identified in connection with the alleged plot.

There has also been no public confirmation that any attack has taken place in Osun as a result of the intelligence.

The warning is therefore aimed at prevention and heightened awareness.

Religious leaders have been encouraged to strengthen their internal security arrangements and ensure that suspicious activities are reported promptly.

The alert has also renewed attention on the security of public gathering centres in the state.

Osun is home to numerous churches, mosques, markets, schools and other venues that regularly attract large crowds.

Such locations are therefore expected to remain areas of interest to security agencies during periods of heightened security concerns.

The alleged plot was reportedly linked by the DSS to efforts to create fear and disrupt the 2027 elections.

The agency’s warning has prompted religious bodies to communicate the message to their members.

Residents are expected to remain vigilant while avoiding unnecessary panic.

Security agencies and community leaders are also expected to continue monitoring developments and responding to any credible threats.
