Plateau Mining Accident: Troops Confirm Four Deaths After Pit Collapse

Four people are dead after a sand excavation pit collapsed in Tangur community, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, but the circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.

The collapse occurred at about 2:20pm on Tuesday along a river line where suspected illegal mining activities were taking place.

Troops responded to information about the incident and confirmed the deaths.

One of the victims was identified as Mallam Fahad Aliyu. Three women were also killed, but their identities had not been established when the report emerged.

Relatives recovered the bodies for burial.

Several questions remain open.

The first concerns the cause of the collapse. The initial report confirms that the pit gave way but does not establish the precise reason.

Another question concerns the mining operation itself. Authorities are investigating suspected illegal mining at the site and may need to determine who was responsible for the excavation.

The role of the community is another issue.

During preliminary inquiries, troops reportedly engaged the community leader, who said he was unaware that illegal mining was taking place at the location.

That statement does not by itself explain how the operation began or how long it had been active. Those details remain part of the investigation.

The identities of three victims are also yet to be established.

Their identification could help investigators determine more about the people working at the site and allow relatives who may not yet have received confirmation to be informed.

The recovery of the bodies has allowed burial preparations to begin, but the investigation remains incomplete.

Authorities may also examine whether other excavation activities are occurring in the surrounding area.

The incident has therefore produced more questions than answers at this stage.

What is confirmed is that a pit collapsed in Tangur, four suspected illegal miners died and troops responded to the scene.

The investigation will determine the remaining details, including what caused the collapse, who was operating the site and how the suspected illegal mining activity was taking place.

More information is expected as inquiries continue.
