Enugu rescues 16-year-old girl banished over alleged impregnation by father

The Enugu State Government has rescued a 16-year-old girl who was banished from her community alongside her father following allegations that he sexually abused and impregnated her, as authorities move to secure her welfare and pursue the suspect.

The teenager has been taken into safe shelter by the state Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development after the incident in Nenwe, Aninri Local Government Area, sparked public outrage.

Ngozi Enih, the state commissioner for children, gender affairs and social development, confirmed the intervention, saying the ministry acted after concerns were raised over the girl’s treatment by members of the community.

The girl’s father is reportedly on the run, with efforts underway to apprehend him and ensure that the allegations are investigated.

Community banished father and daughter

The incident came to public attention after residents of Nenwe reportedly expelled the teenager and her father on Thursday, October 15, following allegations that he was responsible for her pregnancy.

Videos circulating on social media showed community members escorting the pair towards the town’s exit. The father and daughter were reportedly draped in palm fronds, a traditional symbol associated with abomination in parts of Igbo culture.

During the procession, an elderly community member was heard explaining that the decision followed what residents considered a serious violation of their customs and traditions.

The decision to banish the girl alongside the man accused of abusing her drew criticism, with concerns raised over the treatment of a minor who may herself have been a victim of sexual violence.

The allegations against the father have not been established through a reported court judgment, and the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy remain subject to investigation.

Government promises protection and support

Enih said the rescued teenager would receive care focused on her physical health, emotional well-being and overall safety.

She stressed that children who experience sexual abuse should not be blamed, rejected or punished for what happened to them.

The commissioner also said the ministry would provide appropriate psychosocial support to help the teenager cope with the trauma and begin her recovery.

According to her, the state government remains committed to protecting vulnerable children, upholding their rights and ensuring that survivors of abuse receive the necessary care and support.

She commended members of the public who raised the alarm and brought the girl’s situation to the attention of the authorities.

The commissioner said efforts were ongoing to arrest the girl’s father and work with the relevant authorities towards his prosecution.

The intervention places the focus on the teenager’s safety and the need for the allegations to be handled through appropriate investigative and legal processes.

The case has also renewed concerns about the risks faced by children who experience sexual abuse, particularly when community responses expose them to further rejection or harm.

The Enugu State Government said it would continue strengthening child protection measures and ensuring that vulnerable children receive assistance when their safety and welfare are threatened.
