Mexico clears Reno Omokri for Nigeria’s ambassadorial role

Mexico has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador, clearing a major hurdle that had delayed his diplomatic posting for several months.

The approval was communicated to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on Tuesday by José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Nigeria, who delivered the diplomatic clearance to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, the ministry’s Director of Protocol.

Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, confirming that Mexico had granted the required diplomatic consent, known as agrément, for him to serve as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the country.

His assignment also covers concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, meaning he will represent Nigeria in four countries under the approved diplomatic arrangement.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025, alongside other nominees, including former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission chairman Mahmood Yakubu.

The Senate subsequently confirmed the nominees in December 2025, while Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to foreign missions in March 2026. Omokri was assigned to Mexico City.

His deployment remained pending while the government awaited Mexico’s formal acceptance of his nomination.

In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to communicate approval for two outstanding ambassadorial postings. The ministry maintained that diplomatic engagements were ongoing to secure the necessary clearances.

The delay had also generated public attention, with reports of a petition by a Nigerian diaspora group urging the Mexican government to reject Omokri’s nomination over his political comments and past positions. There was no official confirmation at the time that Mexico had rejected his appointment.

Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, is widely known for his political commentary and outspoken presence on social media. His ambassadorial appointment marks a move from political advocacy into formal diplomatic representation.

Under diplomatic practice, agrément is the receiving country’s formal consent to accept a proposed ambassador. It is a key requirement before the appointment can proceed to the final stages of accreditation.
