Elon Musk’s brain technology company, Neuralink, has unveiled two products designed to change how humans communicate with computers and potentially restore sight to people who are blind.
The products, named Telepathy and Blindsight, are being developed to use brain signals to perform tasks without relying on conventional physical interaction.
Musk announced the products in separate posts on X on Friday, October 30, describing Telepathy as the company’s first product and Blindsight as its second.
Telepathy is designed to allow users to communicate with computers and other people through thoughts alone. Musk said the technology would eventually deliver communication speeds beyond what humans can achieve through speaking or typing.
The system works through a brain-computer interface that interprets neural activity and translates intended movements into digital commands.
Neuralink has already been testing the technology with people living with paralysis, enabling participants to control computer cursors and interact with digital applications through their thoughts.
Recent engineering work has also explored practical applications, including thought-based phone calls and faster text editing.
The company’s second product, Blindsight, is designed to help people with severe visual impairment regain some form of sight by stimulating the brain’s visual cortex.
Musk said the device is ready from an engineering standpoint but is awaiting regulatory approval before it can proceed.
Unlike conventional approaches that depend on repairing damaged eyes or optic nerves, Blindsight aims to bypass parts of the natural visual pathway by transmitting visual information directly to the brain.
The technology could eventually offer an option for people who have lost their sight, including those who have never been able to see.
It’s ability to restore useful vision in humans has not yet been established through publicly confirmed human trial results.
Blindsight received Breakthrough Device Designation from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2024.
The designation is intended to speed up the development and review of medical devices targeting serious conditions, but it does not amount to full regulatory approval.
Neuralink has expanding ambitions in brain-computer technology, with its research targeting communication difficulties, physical limitations and visual impairment.
