NIMC arrests illegal NIN operators in nationwide enforcement crackdown

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several suspected illegal National Identification Number (NIN) operators and seized enrolment equipment during an enforcement operation in Gwagwalada, Abuja, and other locations.

The arrests followed an intensified crackdown by the commission’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU) on unauthorised NIN enrolment, illegal modification of personal information and extortion of applicants.

In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the commission said the operation was aimed at eliminating unauthorised enrolment activities and unethical practices capable of undermining the integrity, security and credibility of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.

NIMC expressed concern that many of the challenges experienced by NIN holders stem from attempts to bypass established enrolment procedures through unapproved operators.

The commission stressed that initial NIN enrolment must only be conducted at its officially approved centres, while requests for personal data modification should be processed through its authorised self-service platform.

It also advised NIN holders to download the NINAuth application, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, to access additional security features, protect their identity information and print their NIN slips.

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the commission’s zero-tolerance position on extortion and unethical conduct among enrolment operators.

She said the commission remained committed to providing seamless and accessible NIN enrolment services to Nigerians and legal residents.

NIMC urged applicants and existing NIN holders to avoid unauthorised agents and use only approved channels for enrolment and other identity-related services.

The commission advised members of the public to obtain accurate information through its official website, www.nimc.gov.ng, or verified social media platforms. It also provided a toll-free line, 0800 0616 462, for enquiries.
