Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has made history in the United States after winning Michigan’s Senate election, becoming the first Muslim ever elected to the US Senate.
El-Sayed defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the closely watched contest held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, securing the seat previously occupied by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
His victory marks a significant milestone in American political representation, with the 42-year-old former public health official set to become the first Muslim member of the upper chamber of the US Congress when the new Senate takes office in January 2027.
The Michigan race attracted national attention, partly because of the controversy surrounding El-Sayed’s religious identity and political positions.
President Donald Trump and several Republican allies repeatedly criticised the Democratic candidate during the campaign, with some of their remarks drawing accusations of anti-Muslim rhetoric.
El-Sayed rejected allegations questioning his loyalty and maintained that his religious background should not determine his suitability for public office.
During his campaign, the Democrat focused heavily on economic concerns affecting ordinary Americans, including the rising cost of living, healthcare affordability and corporate influence in government.
He also advocated universal healthcare through the Medicare for All proposal and called for an end to American military assistance to Israel, particularly amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the war in Gaza.
His opponent, Rogers, a former congressman and FBI agent, received Trump’s endorsement and campaigned on economic policies that included tax cuts and efforts to strengthen American manufacturing.
El-Sayed’s election represents a historic moment for Muslim Americans, who have continued to gain visibility and representation in the country’s political institutions.
His victory also retains Michigan’s Senate seat in Democratic hands following Peters’ decision to leave office.
