Nigeria’s Ambassador to Sweden, Lola Akande, has formally commenced her diplomatic assignment in Denmark after presenting her Letters of Credence to King Frederik X, with a pledge to strengthen cooperation between both countries in climate action, security and sustainable development.
Akande presented the diplomatic credentials to the Danish monarch on Thursday, October 8, at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen, marking the formal beginning of her responsibilities as Nigeria’s ambassador to the Nordic country.
During the meeting, the ambassador reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Denmark and expanding collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
She also commended King Frederik X for his sustained advocacy for global sustainability and climate action, describing environmental protection, peace and security, and sustainable development as important areas for advancing relations between the two countries.
Akande expressed Nigeria’s readiness to work more closely with the Danish government, business community and other relevant stakeholders to broaden cooperation and strengthen existing diplomatic ties.
Nigeria and Denmark have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with opportunities for collaboration spanning trade, investment, climate action, security and sustainable development.
The presentation of Letters of Credence is a formal diplomatic procedure through which an ambassador is officially accredited to a host country.
It authorises the envoy to undertake diplomatic responsibilities and represent the interests of the appointing country.
Akande was appointed Nigeria’s ambassador to Sweden in March 2026, with concurrent accreditation to Denmark, Finland and Norway.
She formally assumed her diplomatic responsibilities in Sweden on September 16, after presenting her credentials to King Carl XVI Gustaf in Stockholm.
Before her diplomatic appointment, Akande served as Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
Her new assignment places her at the centre of Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with four Nordic countries, where the Federal Government is seeking to strengthen bilateral relations and explore areas of shared economic, environmental and security interests.
