The Nigeria Police Force has arrested four suspects over an alleged plot to kidnap a 59-year-old Abuja prophetess after she shared a testimony about her achievements and business success in church.
The suspects allegedly bought a locally fabricated firearm for N120,000 and planned to stage a road accident to intercept the cleric on her way home after an evening church service.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Adamu Muazu, disclosed the details while presenting the suspects on Thursday.
The intended victim, identified as Prophetess Elizabeth Amaka Afobike, is an assistant pastor who reportedly became a target after sharing her testimony during a church service.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly used their familiarity with the prophetess and knowledge of her movements to plan the abduction.
One of the suspects, David Obaje, 26, reportedly worked as the prophetess’s driver for about three months. Another suspect, David Dennis, 39, was said to have served as a bodyguard to the church’s senior pastor.
Investigators alleged that the suspects coordinated their activities through a WhatsApp group and planned to execute the operation on October 1, after an evening church service.
Their alleged plan involved using a vehicle to hit or block the prophetess’s car, forcing her to stop before they abducted her.
The police said the suspects allegedly obtained the firearm from a vigilante group for N120,000. Operatives also recovered a vehicle and a security uniform reportedly linked to the planned operation.
The alleged plot was disrupted following intelligence received by security operatives, who arrested the suspects before the abduction could be carried out.
Following the arrests, Muazu warned religious leaders and worshippers against publicly disclosing sensitive personal and financial information that could expose them to criminal targeting.
He also urged churches and mosques to strengthen security arrangements, particularly during evening services and when worshippers are returning home.
The police said investigations were continuing to establish the full circumstances of the alleged conspiracy and prepare the case for prosecution.
