The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has moved relief supplies to Rivers State as part of the federal response to flooding that recently affected parts of Port Harcourt.

NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, activated a technical team to assess the situation and support the response to the flooding. The team was led by the agency’s Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Bature Usman.

Following its arrival in Port Harcourt, the team visited some of the affected locations to assess the extent of the situation before proceeding with the delivery of relief materials approved by the agency.

The intervention was formally presented to the Rivers State Government during a visit to Government House in Port Harcourt.

Speaking during the presentation, Usman conveyed Umar’s concern over the impact of the flooding on residents and said the team had been sent to strengthen coordination and provide technical assistance alongside the response efforts of the state government and other stakeholders.

He explained that the relief supplies were provided by the Federal Government through NEMA to support the Rivers State Government in addressing the immediate needs of people affected by the flooding.

Receiving the NEMA delegation on behalf of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu thanked the agency for its intervention and support.

Odu said the state would ensure that the materials are distributed to residents affected by the flooding and reach the people for whom they were intended.

The relief items were subsequently handed over to the Rivers State Head of Service, Inyingi Brown, who inspected the supplies at the designated warehouse in Port Harcourt.

NEMA said the intervention was part of its broader collaboration with state governments and other relevant stakeholders to improve disaster response and provide timely humanitarian assistance whenever communities are affected by emergencies.
