A Lagos Island man identified simply as Basit has died after being attacked by residents following an alleged hit-and-run incident.
The victim had reportedly returned to Nigeria from abroad ahead of his wedding.
His wedding was said to have been about two weeks away when the incident occurred.
Reports said the incident happened on Wednesday night in the Patey area of Lagos Island.
Basit was allegedly driving in the area when his car struck a male resident who was attempting to cross the road.
According to a resident familiar with the incident, Basit allegedly drove away after the collision.
His decision to leave the scene reportedly triggered a chase.
Residents pursued the vehicle and eventually caught up with him.
The situation then escalated into violence.
A resident identified as Afolabi Lawal said members of the mob attacked Basit with sticks and bottles.
He reportedly sustained injuries to his head during the assault.
Lawal said Basit eventually became unconscious.
The mob reportedly dispersed after realising that he was unresponsive.
Basit later died.
The death has led to a police investigation, with a police source confirming that some suspects had been taken into custody.
The source also said Basit’s remains had been deposited in a morgue.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, reportedly could not be reached for immediate comment.
The investigation will now focus on both the circumstances of the alleged road collision and the events that followed.
Police will need to establish how the accident occurred, why Basit allegedly left the scene, how he was apprehended and who participated in the subsequent attack.
The case has also revived questions about the dangers of mob justice.
When a crowd decides to punish a person suspected of wrongdoing, the situation can quickly move beyond control.
The use of bottles and sticks in the reported assault resulted in serious head injuries, according to an eyewitness account.
Basit’s death means the incident has gone beyond an alleged road offence and become a fatal criminal investigation.
The tragedy is particularly significant for his family because he had reportedly returned to Nigeria for his wedding.
His planned marriage was expected to take place in approximately two weeks.
The circumstances have transformed what should have been a period of celebration into one of grief.
The reported arrests could provide investigators with an opportunity to reconstruct the events that led to Basit’s death.
Authorities are expected to question those arrested and gather other evidence relating to the incident.
The case also serves as a reminder that alleged offenders should be handed over to the police rather than subjected to violence.
While residents may have been angered by the alleged collision and the driver’s reported departure from the scene, the law requires allegations to be investigated through due process.
The death of Basit shows the potentially irreversible consequences of mob attacks.
As the investigation proceeds, authorities will be expected to determine responsibility for the assault and take appropriate legal action against anyone found to have participated in the fatal attack.
