Elektron Energy Development Strategies Limited has secured regulatory approval to generate electricity in Lagos, strengthening the company’s position as it prepares its Victoria Island power project for operation.

The generation licence was issued by the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, the agency overseeing electricity regulation within the state.

Elektron’s Victoria Island development is planned as a 40MW embedded power project aimed at supplying electricity within the commercial district.

The project comes against the backdrop of persistent efforts by businesses across Lagos to find alternatives to diesel generation and improve the reliability of their electricity supply.

For commercial users, the cost of self-generation has become an important operating expense. A dedicated electricity network capable of serving customers within a defined area could offer businesses another option.

Embedded generation differs from conventional large-scale power stations because electricity is produced relatively close to the consumers who use it. The model can be particularly useful in areas with concentrated demand.

Victoria Island is one of Lagos’ major commercial centres, making it a natural location for such an arrangement.

Elektron has been developing the project through its Victoria Island Power initiative, with the company describing its wider business as focused on energy infrastructure across West Africa.

The latest regulatory approval marks a significant point in the project’s development because a generation licence is required before electricity can legally be produced under the state’s regulatory framework.

Reports on the project indicate that construction is nearing completion.
