Vice-President Kashim Shettima is expected to join world leaders in New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, where Nigeria plans to reinforce its relationships with key international partners.

The summit is billed for September 12 and 13.

The Federal Government said Nigeria’s participation is centred on consolidating bilateral relations as the country continues to expand its diplomatic and economic engagement with emerging economies.

Shettima’s expected attendance gives Nigeria senior representation at the meeting and provides an opportunity for direct discussions with participating governments.

The BRICS summit has become an important gathering for emerging economies, particularly on questions involving economic cooperation and international development.

Nigeria’s participation comes against the backdrop of the government’s efforts to attract investment and broaden trade relationships. Abuja has increasingly focused on international economic diplomacy as it seeks additional opportunities for Nigerian businesses and the wider economy.

The New Delhi meeting will allow Nigeria to engage countries with significant economic influence and explore areas where bilateral cooperation can be strengthened.

Although the Federal Government has not released details of every meeting expected during the Vice-President’s visit, it said strengthening bilateral relationships remains a priority.

Nigeria’s participation is also consistent with its wider foreign policy approach of maintaining relationships with countries across different economic and political groupings.

The government has continued to pursue partnerships with both established economies and emerging markets, reflecting the need to widen Nigeria’s economic links.

The summit’s September 12 and 13 schedule gives Nigerian officials a defined platform for high-level diplomatic engagement in New Delhi.

Beyond the formal summit discussions, Nigeria’s participation could provide opportunities for further bilateral conversations with individual countries represented at the gathering.

The Federal Government said it would continue to pursue international partnerships that serve Nigeria’s economic and strategic interests.
