ASUU Sets September 28 Deadline for Taraba Govt to Implement 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Taraba State University chapter, has given the Taraba State Government 14 days to implement outstanding provisions of its 2025 agreement with the lecturers.

ASUU-TSU issued the ultimatum on September 14, setting September 28 as the deadline for the government to address the unresolved commitments.

The branch chairman, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, said the union had continued to engage the government in the interest of industrial harmony but maintained that important provisions of the agreement remained outstanding.

The latest notice follows an earlier 14-day ultimatum issued on August 13, which expired on August 26 without resolving the issues raised by the lecturers.

Rather than immediately escalate the matter, the union suspended further action to allow the university’s combined convocation ceremonies to proceed. The decision provided additional room for discussions with the state government.

Those engagements, however, did not settle all the outstanding matters, leading the union to issue another ultimatum.

At the centre of the dispute are provisions of the 2025 agreement which ASUU-TSU says have not been fully implemented. The union has maintained that commitments reached during negotiations must be followed by concrete action.

ASUU-TSU acknowledged the Taraba Government’s efforts to engage with the lecturers and its stated commitment to dialogue. The branch, however, said important issues remained unresolved despite the discussions.

The union has also called on stakeholders in the education sector to intervene and encourage both sides to reach a resolution.

ASUU-TSU said such intervention would help protect industrial harmony at the university while creating room for the implementation of provisions already agreed upon.

The lecturers have warned that failure to resolve the outstanding matters could lead to lawful industrial action. The union has not announced a specific date for any such action.

The latest ultimatum places the implementation of the 2025 agreement back at the centre of the engagement between ASUU-TSU and the state government.

The union’s position is that the outstanding provisions must be addressed, following the earlier notice, its suspension to accommodate the convocation ceremonies and subsequent discussions with the government.
