However, its overall position does not mean that longstanding challenges affecting the business environment have been resolved.

Among the major reforms introduced since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023 are the removal of the petrol subsidy and changes to the foreign exchange market. The administration has also pursued electricity tariff reforms as part of efforts to address structural weaknesses in the economy.

These measures have sought to ease pressure on public finances, improve the functioning of the foreign exchange market and strengthen the conditions for private investment.

However, the reforms have also contributed to significant adjustment costs for households and businesses, particularly through higher living expenses and increased operating costs.

Inflation, infrastructure deficits, foreign exchange pressures and concerns about public debt remain important considerations for investors weighing opportunities in Africa’s largest economy by population.

Mauritius took the top position in the 2026 ranking, while South Africa, which led the previous edition, slipped to second place following a weaker economic growth outlook.

Nigeria’s improved standing therefore reflects a change in its relative position among African investment destinations rather than a declaration that it has become the continent’s least risky or most attractive market.

Tinubu’s administration must now demonstrate that the improved ranking can deliver more than favourable investor sentiment. The real test will be whether the reforms attract sustained capital, create jobs, bring down inflation and ease the cost-of-living pressures facing millions of Nigerians.

Nigeria’s rise in the investment rankings gives the government a stronger case for its economic agenda, but the ultimate verdict will rest on results. If improved investor confidence fails to translate into higher productivity, stronger purchasing power and broad-based growth, the gap between economic reform and the lived reality of Nigerians will remain a defining measure of the administration’s record.

Nigeria has climbed four places to rank eighth among Africa’s most investable economies, emerging as the continent’s biggest climber in the 2026 Bloomberg Economics Investment Risk-O-Meter.
