Mr Macaroni Breaks Silence on Why He Stepped Back From Government Criticism

Nigerian actor and content creator Adebowale Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has explained why he reduced his public criticism of the government, saying years of threats, backlash and the frustration of repeating the same message contributed to his decision to take a break.

Mr Macaroni made the clarification on Wednesday after Wazobia FM shared excerpts from an interview in which he spoke about the personal risks associated with his activism, particularly during the #EndSARS period.

He explained that the interview was recorded more than two years ago but said the concerns he raised at the time remained relevant.

According to him, his decision to step back was not a result of fear or a decision to abandon issues affecting Nigerians. Rather, he said he had become tired of repeatedly raising concerns about governance while seeing citizens return to their daily struggles without sustained pressure for change.

Mr Macaroni said the reaction from Nigerians themselves also contributed to his frustration. He noted that public figures who speak about social and political issues can become targets of abuse from the same citizens they seek to represent.

His comments also recalled the threats he said he received during the #EndSARS protests, when his activism placed considerable pressure on him and his family.

He said his family became deeply concerned about his safety during that period, with repeated calls urging him to reconsider his activities and even suggestions that he leave the country.

Despite those concerns, Mr Macaroni said he continued to participate in civic discussions after the protests. He was also active around the 2023 general election, using his platforms to encourage Nigerians to participate and make informed choices.

He said publicly expressing his own political preference during the election also attracted insults and attacks, reinforcing his view that political conversations in Nigeria can quickly become deeply personal.

The actor said the experience eventually left him questioning what more he could say after repeatedly making the same arguments.

In March 2026, he had publicly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration in unusually strong terms. He has now identified that period as a point when he decided to withdraw from the cycle of constant political commentary.

Mr Macaroni also criticised what he described as a widespread survival mentality, arguing that Nigerians often become preoccupied with getting through immediate difficulties rather than sustaining pressure for broader improvements in the political and economic environment.

His latest comments therefore frame his absence from frequent political commentary as a deliberate pause rather than a permanent withdrawal from public issues.

He said he remains willing to speak when Nigerians are prepared to demand greater accountability, while currently concentrating on redefining his artistic work.

His comments offer a different perspective on the cost of celebrity activism in Nigeria, where entertainers with large audiences increasingly find themselves drawn into debates over governance, elections and public accountability.
