Mutfwang Pardons 130 Inmates in Plateau, Commutes Four Death Sentences

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has granted an absolute pardon to 130 inmates across custodial facilities in the state and commuted the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment.

The governor announced the decision on Thursday as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Mutfwang said the exercise was carried out after consultations with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

According to the governor, the pardon was granted in accordance with the powers vested in him under the Nigerian Constitution.

He said four inmates who had been sentenced to death would instead serve life imprisonment.

The governor said the Independence anniversary provided an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since gaining independence in 1960, while also recognising the sacrifices made by previous generations.

Mutfwang called on Nigerians to continue working towards national unity, peace and development, saying every citizen had a role to play in nation-building.

He also urged Plateau residents to remain committed to peaceful coexistence and the development of the state.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a Plateau where residents can pursue their aspirations in an environment characterised by peace, security, justice and inclusive development.

He commended residents for what he described as their resilience and contributions to the development of Plateau State and Nigeria.

Mutfwang also wished Nigerians at home and abroad a peaceful and meaningful Independence anniversary.

The pardon and sentence commutations form part of the governor’s exercise of the constitutional prerogative of mercy.
