Shekarau, Hamzat, Oshiomhole call for tolerance as Nigeria confronts ethnic and religious divisions

Political leaders at a Lagos forum have called for a broader approach to Nigerian politics, arguing that ethnic and religious differences should not prevent citizens from working towards common national goals.

The call came during The Companion’s seventh national discourse at the University of Lagos on Sunday. The programme brought together politicians, academics and religious leaders for discussions on Nigeria’s democratic experience.

Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat said Nigeria’s diversity required political institutions capable of accommodating different communities while maintaining a strong national bond.

He said Nigerians could retain their cultural and religious identities while developing a greater commitment to the country as a whole.

Oshiomhole said political candidates should not depend on ethnic loyalties to secure support.

The senator argued that voters should instead focus on the competence, proposals and values of those seeking public office.

He described Nigeria’s diversity as a potential strength if it was not manipulated for political advantage.

Shekarau, who chaired the event, focused on relations between religious communities.

He said Nigerians should deepen their understanding of their faiths and avoid allowing religious differences to produce hostility.

He also warned political leaders against placing their own interests above those of the wider population.

The discussions highlighted the continuing challenge of building political institutions that can accommodate Nigeria’s diversity while promoting equal citizenship and national cohesion.
