Accepting Transport Money From Men You Don’t Plan to Meet Could Land You in Jail — Rivers Police

PORT HARCOURT — The Rivers State Police Command has cautioned members of the public about accepting money from individuals they have never met physically.

The warning, issued by Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko, specifically addressed the acceptance of transport money from a man without meeting him in person.

Iringe-Koko said the practice is punishable and could lead to imprisonment.

The statement underscores the potential risks associated with financial transactions involving strangers, especially where the relationship between the parties has been established online.

Receiving money does not automatically establish criminal liability. However, the circumstances surrounding a payment can become significant if the funds are connected to an alleged offence.

For that reason, people are advised to establish the identity of individuals sending them money and understand why a payment is being made before accepting it.

The warning is also relevant to the growing use of social media and messaging platforms to establish relationships and conduct financial transactions.

Online anonymity can make it difficult for individuals to know the true identity or intentions of someone they communicate with.

Police authorities have continued to encourage Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

The Rivers warning serves as another reminder that financial transactions involving strangers should not be treated casually, particularly when the source or purpose of the funds is unclear.

Members of the public should exercise caution and seek appropriate legal or law-enforcement guidance if they suspect that money offered to them may be connected to fraudulent or criminal activity.
