British Shoppers Pull Back as Retail Growth Slumps in August

British consumers appeared to slow their spending in August, pushing UK retail sales growth to its weakest level in four months.

Figures released by the British Retail Consortium showed that total retail sales increased by 0.7% compared with August last year. That was a notable slowdown from the 1.3% annual growth recorded in July.

Like-for-like sales also weakened, increasing by 0.5% in August compared with 1% the previous month.

The figures provide a fresh indication that the strong consumer momentum seen earlier in the summer is beginning to moderate.

Retailers had enjoyed stronger demand after unusually warm temperatures arrived from May. The weather encouraged shoppers to make seasonal purchases earlier than normal, supporting sales across parts of the retail market.

However, the early boost also meant some spending was brought forward. As August progressed, retailers faced the challenge of maintaining sales without the same level of weather-related support.

Food, drink, health and beauty products continued to record growth, helped by warm weather and holiday spending. Other categories found it harder to sustain the momentum achieved earlier in the summer.

KPMG’s Linda Ellett said the earlier start to summer spending was likely to have played a role in August’s weaker performance.

The slowdown does not mean that British consumers stopped spending. Retail sales still recorded annual growth during the month. However, the pace of expansion was considerably lower than in July.

For retailers, the figures could prove important as they prepare for the remainder of the year. Businesses will have to contend with changing seasonal demand while attempting to attract consumers through a period when the weather is no longer providing the same boost.

The BRC figures also underline the importance of timing in consumer spending. Purchases made earlier in the summer can strengthen sales in one period while leaving less demand available for retailers later.

The August data therefore presents a mixed picture of the British consumer market.

Retail activity remains positive, but the sharp reduction in annual growth suggests that retailers may be entering a period of slower momentum after the summer’s unusually strong weather-driven spending.

For now, the BRC data suggests that Britain’s retail market is moving away from the unusually strong conditions experienced earlier in the summer.

The figures also demonstrate how weather can influence shopping patterns, with unusually high temperatures capable of moving seasonal spending forward and altering the timing of demand.
