NDC Plateau Ticket Fight Tests Party Unity Ahead of 2027

The NDC’s internal battle over its Plateau State governorship ticket is quickly becoming a test of whether the party can manage competing interests without damaging its chances in the 2027 election.

The immediate issue is the status of Da Jonathan Sunday Akuns.

He emerged unopposed from the party’s direct primary on May 29, but subsequent developments have left his position uncertain.

Stakeholders opposed to the move to replace him have now called for the intervention of national leader Henry Seriake Dickson.

They want the proposed September 15 rerun halted.

The disagreement has created an awkward situation for the party.

On one side are stakeholders insisting that the original primary produced a clear winner.

On the other are political interests pushing for a different arrangement after Akuns was reportedly suspended.

The use of Plateau chairman Yakubu Ndam as a placeholder has added another layer to the dispute.

The Guardian reported that the placeholder arrangement was designed to give stakeholders time to negotiate a consensus candidate.

However, consensus has proved difficult.

The controversy demonstrates the challenge political parties face when different camps have competing ideas about electoral strategy.

One faction may prioritise the outcome of an internal primary, while another may believe that a different candidate offers stronger political prospects.

The difficulty is finding a solution that does not alienate the losing side.

A candidate imposed without sufficient internal support may struggle to mobilise party structures.

At the same time, refusing to reconsider a disputed arrangement can also deepen factional disagreements.

The NDC must therefore find a middle ground.

The party could attempt a reconciliation process that allows all sides to present their concerns before a final decision.

Alternatively, it could proceed with another primary, provided the process is transparent enough to command broad acceptance.

Whatever route is chosen, speed will matter.

The longer the disagreement continues, the more difficult it becomes to organise a coordinated campaign.

The party also faces the possibility of legal action if any faction challenges the nomination process.

That would create additional uncertainty as the 2027 election approaches.

Plateau is therefore becoming an important test case for the NDC.

The party wants to present itself nationally as a credible alternative, but that ambition depends partly on its ability to demonstrate internal discipline.

The resolution of the Plateau ticket dispute could either strengthen that image or expose weaknesses in the party’s internal decision-making.

With the proposed rerun approaching, attention is now turning to the national leadership.

Its next decision could determine whether the Plateau NDC crisis ends through compromise or develops into a much bigger political confrontation.
