Zverev Wins Record $5.5m Prize With US Open Title

Alexander Zverev’s US Open triumph delivered more than another Grand Slam trophy.

The German also secured a record $5.5 million prize after defeating Ben Shelton in the men’s final.

Zverev won 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 to claim his first US Open championship and second Grand Slam title of the season.

The prize money matches the amount awarded to women’s champion Elena Rybakina and represents the largest singles payout in Grand Slam history, according to reports.

But the financial reward was only part of the significance.

Zverev entered the tournament with a major point to prove after finally winning his first Grand Slam at the French Open earlier this year.

The US Open provided another opportunity to establish himself as one of the dominant players of 2026.

He delivered under pressure.

The German faced Shelton, a 23-year-old American who had enjoyed a remarkable run to his first major final.

Shelton had defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal and Frances Tiafoe in the semifinal.

The home crowd was firmly behind him.

Zverev remained focused.

He won the opening set 6-3 and dominated the second-set tiebreak before Shelton mounted a comeback in the third.

The American took that set 7-5.

Zverev responded by taking the fourth 6-2 and sealing the championship.

The result has major implications for the German’s career.

He now has two Grand Slam titles in one season after years of coming close without winning one.

His first major final appearance ended in disappointment when he lost the 2020 US Open final after leading Thiem by two sets.

That experience made his latest victory particularly significant.

The $5.5 million payout also underlines the financial scale of modern Grand Slam tennis.

Winning a major title can dramatically increase a player’s earnings through prize money, sponsorships and commercial opportunities.

Shelton will also leave the tournament with a significant financial reward despite finishing runner-up.

More importantly, his run has established him as one of the rising stars of men’s tennis.

The American now has the experience of a Grand Slam final to build on.

Zverev, meanwhile, leaves New York with both the trophy and the biggest payday of his career at the tournament.

His 2026 season is rapidly becoming one of the most significant campaigns of his professional career.
