Rivers police suspend two DPOs after suspected cultists renovate police outpost

Two senior police officers in Rivers State have been removed from their positions after suspected cultists allegedly renovated a police outpost and visited the facility to celebrate the completion of the project, prompting an investigation into possible breaches of police procedures.

The affected officers are the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the Abuloma Police Outpost. Both have been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Rivers State Police Command announced the action on Friday, October 16, following reports and a video circulating on social media about the renovation and the alleged involvement of suspected cultists.

The development has raised questions about how the renovation was approved, who financed the project and whether proper checks were conducted before the individuals were allowed to contribute to the improvement of a police facility.

Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju has ordered a full investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the project and verify the allegations.

According to the command, investigators will identify the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation, establish which officers authorised the work and determine whether the required procedures were followed.

The probe will also examine whether any police personnel compromised professional standards or engaged in conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the force.

The command condemned any association that could give suspected cult groups recognition, legitimacy or influence through their involvement with police facilities.

It stressed that police stations and outposts are public institutions established to protect citizens and enforce the law, warning that they must not become platforms for groups suspected of criminal activities to gain public acceptance.

The police command also acknowledged that members of the public are permitted to support the improvement of police facilities under Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.

It said such assistance must not compromise police independence, security or professional standards.

The command maintained that the investigation would establish whether the necessary approvals were obtained and whether appropriate checks were conducted on those who funded or facilitated the renovation.

“No donation or assistance confers immunity from investigation or prosecution,” the statement said.

The police added that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary measures, while relevant legal action could also be taken in line with the findings of the investigation.

The command reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and preventing improper associations between police personnel and suspected criminal groups as the inquiry into the Abuloma outpost renovation continues.
