Two senior police officers have been killed and three inspectors injured after attackers armed with explosives raided a police division in Aba, Abia State, in the early hours of Saturday.

The attack occurred at about 2:26 a.m. at the Urratta-Eziukwu Police Division, setting off a fire that damaged part of the facility and a police patrol vehicle, according to the Abia State Police Command.

Police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka confirmed the casualties in a statement, saying the injured inspectors had been taken for medical treatment.

She added that the attackers did not cart away any firearms or ammunition during the assault.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Wilfred Afolabi, led a team of tactical officers and other operational personnel to the scene to assess the damage and coordinate security operations.

The police said the team combed the surrounding area as efforts intensified to track down those responsible for the attack.

Afolabi condemned the assault and directed security operatives to deploy the necessary operational and intelligence resources to identify, locate and arrest the perpetrators.

He also expressed condolences to the families of the officers killed and the wider police community, while wishing the injured inspectors a speedy recovery.

The command said security operations had been strengthened in the area and urged residents to remain calm and vigilant as investigations continued.

Members of the public were also encouraged to provide credible information that could assist investigators in identifying the attackers and establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As of Saturday, the police had not announced any arrests or publicly identified those responsible for the attack.
