Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal have emerged as the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with reports of discussions among voting journalists suggesting the race could come down to the Bayern Munich striker and Barcelona’s teenage winger.
According to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, journalists who participated in the voting have indicated that Kane is ahead of his rivals, setting up a potential contest with Yamal for football’s most prestigious individual award.
Héctor González, a journalist with Cadena SER, said conversations with other voters suggested the England captain had built a substantial lead in the race.
“When they’ve spoken with other colleagues who voted, the consensus is that Harry Kane is way ahead,” González said.
The voting journalists are bound by an agreement with organisers France Football not to disclose their individual selections. The reported assessments therefore offer an indication of the contest rather than an official confirmation of the final ranking.
Yamal, meanwhile, remains a major contender after an impressive campaign with Barcelona and Spain. His performances have strengthened his position in the race, leaving him as a potential challenger to Kane for the award.
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is also among the prominent names associated with the contest. However, González suggested that the Frenchman’s lack of major trophies during the period under review could count against him.
“That’s what we’re told, because the Frenchman’s biggest flaw is that he hasn’t won any titles with Real Madrid or the French national team,” he said.
González consequently described the contest as a potential two-player race between Kane and Yamal, suggesting that Mbappe’s prospects may have weakened because of his team’s lack of silverware.
Other prominent names linked to the award include Barcelona midfielder Rodri, Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi.
Kane’s reported advantage places him in a strong position as the football world awaits the announcement of the winner. However, the reported conversations among voters do not establish the final result, which remains subject to the official announcement by the organisers.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on October 26, when the winner will be formally announced.
