Nigerian comedian and actor Broda Shaggi has recounted how a stray bullet struck him while he was returning from a work assignment, leaving him bleeding, fearing for his life and uncertain whether he would ever perform again.
The skit maker, whose real name is Samuel Animashaun Perry, described the incident as one of the most frightening experiences of his life in a video shared on his YouTube channel.
According to him, the shooting occurred on March 9, 2026, shortly after he and his team had completed a brand activation assignment and were leaving the location.
“We were done shooting and were on our way when we got stuck in a holdup. Suddenly, I heard a loud bang and everywhere went silent. I could see people talking, but I couldn’t hear anything. Then I touched my hip and saw blood. That was when it dawned on me that I had been hit by a stray bullet,” he recounted.
Shaggi said he became overwhelmed by fear as he realised the seriousness of his injury. He recalled losing consciousness before reaching the hospital, although he remembered praying during the journey for his life to be spared.
“All that was in my mind was just to survive, to live through that moment because I didn’t want to die,” he said.
The comedian was initially taken to a hospital where he received first aid before being transferred to another facility because the first hospital lacked the equipment needed to manage his condition.
Medical personnel at the second hospital admitted him to the emergency room and began treating the gunshot wound. However, his anxiety deepened when he discovered that he could no longer move his injured leg.
The injury also threatened his career, given that dancing, physical comedy and other performances were central to his work. Shaggi said he began questioning whether he would ever return to the activities that had defined his career.
He also revealed that his prolonged absence from entertainment left him worried that audiences might forget him while his colleagues continued producing content and appearing on screen.
Despite his condition, the entertainer tried to remain creatively active during his recovery. He said he continued writing and began working on a YouTube series while undergoing treatment.
Shaggi disclosed that he initially underwent surgery in Nigeria but later travelled to Dubai for further treatment after being told he needed additional medical care and physiotherapy.
He said his recovery improved after the surgery in Dubai, allowing him to stand with support and subsequently walk with crutches. Although he can now stand without them, he said he still uses crutches for support as he continues recovering.
Reflecting on the incident, the comedian expressed gratitude that the bullet struck his hip rather than a more vital part of his body.
He also described surviving the shooting as a second chance at life and assured fans that he was preparing new projects after months away from work.
“I’m grateful to be alive. It’s a second chance. You should also be grateful to have Shaggy back on your screen because right now I’m coming with exciting projects,” Shaggi said.
