Spanish football has been thrown into mourning following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died aged 30 after suffering a serious injury during a second-division match against FC Andorra.
The Spanish club confirmed his death on Tuesday, November 3, following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during Monday’s encounter.
The incident occurred in stoppage time at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, when Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge De Miguel for a long ball. The goalkeeper’s knee struck the Tenerife forward in the chest, leaving him collapsed on the pitch.
Medical personnel immediately rushed to attend to the striker, while players from both teams called for assistance and watched in distress.
De Miguel was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Although medical personnel reportedly managed to restore his heartbeat, his condition remained critical before he eventually died on Tuesday morning.
Tenerife announced the tragic news in a statement, expressing profound sadness over the loss of the player.
The club said De Miguel died at 8:00 a.m. local time, adding that its thoughts were with his family, friends and supporters during the difficult period.
Owono was shown a straight red card following the collision, while the match, which was level at 2-2, was abandoned after the incident.
De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 after previously playing for several Spanish clubs, including Castellón. He had scored 11 goals for the club during the previous season.
The tragedy has attracted widespread condolences from football clubs and organisations, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, La Liga and the Spanish football community.
