A chieftain of the People’s Redemption Party, Yakubu Kingsley, has urged politicians seeking to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election to clearly explain what they intend to do differently if elected.

Kingsley, who is also a presidential aspirant of the PRP, made the call in a statement on Sunday, stressing the need for candidates to present detailed and practical alternatives to Nigerians ahead of the election.

According to him, presidential candidates should go beyond political rhetoric by explaining how their proposed policies and programmes would be implemented. He said voters deserve to know the resources that would be required, the structures that would be responsible for implementation and monitoring, as well as the expected results and timelines.

Kingsley said the 2027 presidential campaign should focus more on ideas, policies, programmes and practical solutions to national challenges rather than personal attacks and political exchanges.

He also argued that campaigns should not be built solely around the removal of an incumbent from office. In his view, candidates seeking to replace the current administration should also explain the alternative they are offering and why Nigerians should consider their proposals.

The PRP chieftain said the presidential election should provide citizens with an opportunity to examine different ideas and approaches to national development.

He encouraged candidates to explain not only the issues they disagree with but also the policies they intend to introduce and the pathway they would use to achieve their objectives.

“The questions before every candidate are straightforward,” Kingsley said, highlighting the need for candidates to explain what they are offering Nigerians that is different, alongside their implementation and monitoring structures, required resources, expected deliverables and timelines.

He said answers to those questions should form an important part of the national conversation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Kingsley further called on political parties, candidates, supporters and media organisations to encourage a debate centred on policies and practical solutions.

He said the election should not be reduced to a contest over who should leave office or who should occupy the presidency. Instead, he called for broader discussions about what Nigeria should become, how the country could reach its desired goals and what each candidate would do differently.

The PRP chieftain maintained that Nigerians should have the opportunity to hear the plans of presidential candidates, examine the alternatives being presented and understand how those proposals would be delivered.

His comments come as political activities and discussions around the 2027 general elections continue to develop, with parties and politicians beginning to position themselves ahead of the polls.
