ILE-IFE, OSUN STATE – Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, an associate of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has reportedly been shot dead in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The circumstances surrounding the reported shooting remained unclear as of the time of filing this report, while details about the identity of the assailants and the events leading to the incident were yet to emerge.
Ajagungbade has been a controversial figure in Osun politics and has previously been associated with Governor Adeleke’s political camp.
He was appointed by Adeleke in 2023 as a member of the state’s Transport Disciplinary Committee. His name has also featured prominently in several political controversies and security-related allegations in the state.
In 2024, Ajagungbade was arraigned before a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo over allegations bordering on murder and terrorism. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court subsequently granted him bail of N50 million in April 2024 after ruling that the prosecution’s proof of evidence was insufficient to justify continued detention at that stage of the proceedings.
His legal troubles had previously attracted significant political attention, with opposition figures repeatedly accusing the Adeleke administration of protecting him. The allegations were denied by the government and remained subjects of political controversy.
In June 2026, the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council again listed Ajagungbade among individuals it alleged were wanted over serious criminal matters. The allegations were political claims and should not be treated as established facts without findings from the relevant authorities.
The latest reported shooting therefore comes against the backdrop of years of controversy surrounding Ajagungbade and his activities within Osun’s political environment.
At the time of publication, there was no confirmed statement from the Osun State Police Command establishing the circumstances of the reported shooting or officially confirming Ajagungbade’s death.
