A leadership transition is underway at Lagos State University after Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the appointment of Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo as Vice-Chancellor.

Badejo is taking over after Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello completed her five-year term at the institution.

The appointment was announced by Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso.

The incoming Vice-Chancellor is a professor of Guidance and Counselling and received her postgraduate education in the field from the University of Lagos.

She holds both a Master of Education and a PhD from UNILAG.

Her academic background will now be applied to a much wider institutional responsibility as she takes charge of LASU.

The Vice-Chancellor’s office is responsible for coordinating the university’s central academic and administrative operations.

That includes working with staff, students and university governing structures while implementing policies and maintaining the institution’s academic direction.

Badejo takes over at a time when Nigerian universities continue to confront issues involving funding, infrastructure, research, technology and student welfare.

LASU, as one of Lagos’ major universities, will need to balance those challenges with the demands of a growing and changing student population.

The new administration will also have to maintain existing academic programmes while determining areas that require fresh intervention.

Badejo’s experience in higher education provides an established foundation for the new role.

She was born on August 4, 1962, and has built her career in academia.

Olatunji-Bello became LASU Vice-Chancellor in 2021 and has now completed her tenure.

The appointment of Badejo therefore represents a formal change in the institution’s leadership.

Attention will now turn to the incoming Vice-Chancellor’s priorities and how she intends to shape the university during her administration.
