A jersey worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals has sold for $12.26 million, setting a new auction record for Jordan memorabilia.

The Chicago Bulls jersey, worn during Game 3 of the Finals against the Utah Jazz, was sold through Joopiter, the digital auction house founded by musician and entrepreneur Pharrell Williams. The buyer was not publicly identified.

The sale surpassed the previous record for a Jordan game-worn item; the $10.091 million paid in 2022 for the jersey he wore during Game 1 of the same Finals series.

Jordan wore the white No. 23 jersey on June 7, 1998, when the Bulls defeated the Jazz 96-54 at the United Center in Chicago. The victory gave Chicago a 2-1 advantage in the series.

The Bulls eventually won the Finals 4-2, securing their sixth NBA championship in eight seasons and Jordan’s sixth and final title with the franchise.

The 1997-98 season became known as Jordan’s “Last Dance” campaign and was later chronicled in the widely watched documentary series of the same name.

Joopiter had estimated that the jersey could sell for between $10 million and $15 million. The auction house described the item as a significant piece of sports history, noting its connection to the final championship run of one of basketball’s most celebrated eras.

The jersey also holds particular significance because it is the only publicly known white game-winning jersey worn by Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals to have been offered for sale, according to Joopiter.

Jordan scored 24 points in Game 3 and played 43 minutes as the Bulls dominated Utah. The victory helped Chicago regain control of the series after losing the opening game.

The latest sale further demonstrates the enduring demand for memorabilia connected to Jordan’s career.

His game-worn items, championship jerseys and sneakers have continued to attract multimillion-dollar prices from collectors.

Despite setting a new record for Jordan memorabilia, the jersey did not become the most expensive piece of game-worn sports memorabilia ever sold.

That record remains with the jersey worn by baseball great Babe Ruth during the 1932 World Series, which sold for $24.12 million in 2024.
