Nigeria’s 66th Independence: FG Declares Thursday Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, a public holiday as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

The announcement means workers across the country will have a day off on Thursday as the government leads activities to commemorate the occasion.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, announced the declaration on Wednesday on behalf of the Federal Government.

In a statement, the minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad and urged citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s progress, challenges and shared future.

He also called on Nigerians to strengthen their commitment to national unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in building the country.

This year’s celebration is being held under the theme, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.”

The Federal Government said the theme reflects its emphasis on consolidating economic and institutional reforms while ensuring that their benefits translate into improved opportunities and living conditions for citizens.

The anniversary comes as the administration of President Bola Tinubu continues to push its reform agenda, with the government highlighting measures aimed at stabilising the economy and creating conditions for longer-term growth.

Tinubu is expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on Thursday as part of activities marking the anniversary.

The Federal Government has also said the celebration will be low-key, with the focus placed on reflection, national unity and the country’s future rather than elaborate festivities.

For millions of Nigerians, the public holiday will provide a break from the usual work routine while turning attention to the bigger questions surrounding the country’s direction.

As the government celebrates the progress recorded so far, the occasion also puts the spotlight on the need to turn reforms into tangible improvements in the daily lives of citizens and build a more stable and prosperous future for the country.
