Pope Leo XIV has called for responsible innovation in artificial intelligence, warning that technological progress must not become a new vehicle for economic or ideological domination.
The Pope delivered the warning during the International Catholic Legislators Network in the Vatican, amid growing global debate about the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence.
He said the world must remain vigilant as AI becomes increasingly embedded in economic systems, communication platforms and everyday life.
One of his major concerns is the possibility of new forms of technological dependence. Poorer countries that lack the financial and technical resources needed to develop advanced AI could become increasingly reliant on wealthier nations and major technology companies.
Such dependence could reinforce existing inequalities and leave developing countries with limited control over technologies that may become essential to their economies.
Pope Leo warned that innovation should not become another form of ideological or economic colonialism.
He also highlighted the influence of algorithms, saying automated systems can determine who is seen and who remains invisible.
The concern is particularly relevant as digital platforms increasingly influence how people receive information and participate in public debate.
The Pope argued that such platforms must operate with accountability and that technological systems should not be allowed to exercise unchecked influence over society.
He also placed workers at the centre of his concerns, warning that human dignity should not be sacrificed simply to optimise systems or increase efficiency.
The remarks come as AI adoption accelerates across the global economy. Companies are investing heavily in artificial intelligence to automate processes, reduce costs and improve productivity, while governments are exploring new applications for the technology.
The transformation has created optimism about economic growth but has also raised concerns about job displacement, inequality and the concentration of technological power.
Pope Leo’s intervention therefore adds an ethical dimension to the global AI debate.
