President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to use his re-election to promote unity, reconciliation, peace and stability across the state.
Tinubu made the call when Adeleke visited the Presidential Villa in Abuja to present his Certificate of Return following his victory in the Osun State governorship election.
Congratulating Adeleke, the President said the governor had a unique opportunity to make history by reaching out to his political opponents and governing in the interest of all residents of Osun.
“You did not conquer anybody. You won an election. That is the essence of democracy,” Tinubu told the governor.
The President urged Adeleke not to stigmatise or victimise his opponents, stressing that democratic leadership requires tolerance, inclusiveness and respect for the rule of law.
He encouraged the governor to use his second term to build bridges across political divides and strengthen unity in the state.
“Expand your coast. That is the only way you can give thanks to the people of Osun. Not the way you sing it or celebrate it, but the way you act it,” Tinubu said.
According to the President, Adeleke’s victory should be regarded as an opportunity to deepen democracy, promote stability and foster peaceful coexistence rather than as a triumph over political opponents.
Tinubu also used the occasion to defend the Federal Government’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy.
He criticised calls for the return of fuel subsidy, arguing that such proposals failed to recognise the economic realities facing the country.
The President maintained that removing the subsidy had freed resources for critical sectors, including road infrastructure, housing, school rehabilitation, healthcare, teacher training and social protection.
Tinubu recalled that before his administration, several states struggled to meet their salary obligations, stressing that governments at all levels have a responsibility to provide basic services and support vulnerable citizens.
He further urged Adeleke to ensure that his administration prioritises peace, stability and inclusive governance while respecting democratic processes.
The President congratulated Adeleke on his electoral victory and commended his mobilisation during the campaign, urging him to return to Osun with a renewed commitment to reconciliation and governance for all.
