Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, have died after the helicopter they were travelling in crashed in the Marondera area, east of Harare.
The crash occurred at about 5pm on Wednesday in rural Marondera, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police. The aircraft had six people on board.
Zimbabwean authorities confirmed that there were no survivors. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana said the helicopter was carrying a prominent businessman, other passengers and two pilots.
Chivayo’s death was subsequently confirmed by a family spokesperson, who said the businessman and his wife were among those killed in the crash.
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said emergency teams were attending the crash site while authorities worked to establish the identities of those involved.
The cause of the crash had not been established as investigations continued.
Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent businessmen and was widely known for his lavish lifestyle, philanthropy and close relationships with senior political figures.
He had also built a substantial public profile through social media, where he frequently showcased luxury vehicles, private aircraft, business activities and donations to individuals and organisations.
His business activities and political connections had attracted public scrutiny over the years. Chivayo denied allegations of wrongdoing connected to his business dealings.
The businessman was also known for his links with several African political leaders, including Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Kenyan President William Ruto.
News of the crash prompted condolences from political figures and others across the region as authorities continued investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The identities of the other victims and further details about the crash were expected to be released by Zimbabwean authorities as the investigation progresses.
