The Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, has suspended academic activities at its School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing indefinitely following the death of a student under controversial circumstances.

The decision affects students in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sets, including master’s student nurses and those undergoing orientation.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, the Coordinator of Programme and Head of School, Dr Taiwo Omirin, announced the suspension on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director.

The management also directed students residing in the hostels to vacate immediately, pending further communication.

According to the notice, the suspension became necessary following the death of Student Nurse Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, which reportedly triggered unrest within the hospital community.

The hospital said the measure was intended to provide a peaceful and conducive environment for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

It urged affected students and other stakeholders to remain calm and comply with the directive, while expressing regret over the inconvenience caused by the suspension.

Taiwo, a post-basic nursing student reportedly living with asthma, died at the institution in circumstances that have raised questions about the response to his medical emergency.

His death sparked protests by fellow students, who alleged negligence in the handling of the emergency and called for an investigation into the incident.

An eyewitness also alleged that Taiwo’s death was the second such incident at the institution this year, raising expected concerns among students and colleagues.

The institution has not provided a date for the resumption of academic activities, leaving affected students awaiting further information from the management.
