ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has welcomed former leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) from Ogun East into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as political activity intensifies ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The politicians, who previously held ward-level positions within their respective parties, are from Ijebu North, Ijebu East, Ijebu North-East and Odogbolu local government areas.
Abiodun received the new APC members during a meeting in Abeokuta and assured them that they would be integrated into the party and given opportunities to participate in its activities.
The governor also highlighted development projects carried out by his administration across the state, urging the new members to support the government’s agenda.
Some of the defectors praised the administration’s performance, saying their decision to leave the opposition parties was influenced in part by what they described as visible development across Ogun State.
The latest defections represent a fresh political boost for the APC in Ogun East Senatorial District, an area expected to attract significant attention as political parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
Abiodun’s reception of opposition figures also reflects the wider political realignment taking place ahead of the elections, with parties seeking to strengthen their grassroots structures and expand their support base.
The governor has previously described the APC as a dominant political force in Ogun State and has continued to encourage politicians from other parties to join the ruling party.
