AK-47, 19 Rounds Recovered as Army Hunts Abuja Kidnappers After General’s Wife Rescue

Two suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate have been arrested following a Nigerian Army operation that resulted in the rescue of the wife of retired Brigadier General Basil Adonkie in Abuja.

The Army said Mrs Adonkie was abducted from her residence in the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday, September 1.

The incident prompted troops of the Guards Brigade and Army Headquarters Garrison to launch a coordinated pursuit operation.

According to the military, troops acting on credible intelligence moved through the Aco Estate–Goza Community axis while tracking the kidnappers.

The Army said the troops eventually established contact with the abductors.

The suspects reportedly abandoned Mrs Adonkie and fled into nearby bushes after encountering the troops.

The woman was subsequently rescued at Angwan Sabo Village.

Following the rescue, troops continued the operation and intensified the pursuit along the Aco Estate–Angwan Sayawa axis.

The military said additional forces were deployed to block likely escape routes and prevent the fleeing suspects from escaping the area.

The operation continued into Wednesday, September 2, when troops intercepted fleeing members of the suspected kidnapping syndicate near Gaube Village in Kuje Area Council.

Two suspected kidnappers were arrested during the operation.

The Army said one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine and 19 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition were also recovered.

The military said troops have continued clearance and tracking operations across the area.

According to the Army, the ongoing operations are intended to apprehend the remaining suspects linked to the kidnapping.
