ADC Turns to Police, Amnesty International Over Detention of Members

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the intervention of the Nigeria Police Force and Amnesty International over the alleged detention of some of its members.

The party is demanding that the circumstances surrounding the detentions be investigated and that its members be protected from what it described as unlawful treatment.

The ADC’s appeal comes amid growing complaints from the opposition party over alleged arrests, disruptions of political meetings and intimidation of its members in different parts of the country.

The party has repeatedly urged the police to investigate incidents involving its members, particularly as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.

In Rivers State, the ADC previously alleged that three of its members were arrested during a political meeting in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The party identified the detained members as Confidence Amadi, Chikezie Justice and Isaiah Thomas.

According to the ADC, the three men were accused of cultism, an allegation the party rejected and described as politically motivated. It called for an investigation into the arrests and demanded their release if no evidence of an offence could be established.

The latest appeal adds to the party’s wider concerns about the treatment of its members and the conduct of political activities ahead of the next general elections.

At a press conference in Abuja on September 21, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the party had documented alleged attacks and disruptions involving its members across several states.

He listed Kaduna, Kebbi, Ekiti, Cross River, Rivers, Edo, Osun, Kogi and Enugu among the states where the party said incidents had been recorded.

Abdullahi said the party’s records included dates and locations of alleged incidents, witness accounts, photographs, videos, medical documentation and complaints submitted to law-enforcement authorities.

The ADC said it would continue to pursue legal and institutional channels while engaging human-rights organisations over cases involving its members.

The party’s allegations have not, by themselves, established wrongdoing by the authorities or individuals accused. The circumstances surrounding the reported detentions remain subject to investigation and due process.
