Three Teenagers Die After Car Plunges Into River Wear in Sunderland, 17-Year-Old Arrested

Three teenagers have died after a car entered the River Wear in Sunderland, England, while a 17-year-old boy who survived the incident has been arrested.

Northumbria Police said a black Audi A3 entered the river near Panns Bank and Wearmouth Bridge at about 1:30pm on Tuesday.

Four people are understood to have been inside the vehicle when it entered the water. A 17-year-old boy managed to reach safety and was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-serious.

Police later confirmed that the bodies of two teenage boys and a teenage girl had been recovered from the river.

The surviving teenager was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody while investigations continue.

A major emergency response was launched after reports of the vehicle entering the River Wear. Police, ambulance crews, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Coastguard teams and other emergency services were involved in the operation.

Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie, Area Commander for Sunderland, described the incident as tragic and said officers were supporting the families and others affected.

Police said the investigation remains at an early stage and urged members of the public not to speculate about what happened or share images from the scene.

Authorities have also asked people to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

The circumstances surrounding how the car entered the river have not yet been established. Police have said no other vehicles are currently believed to have been involved.
