Families Face Fresh Delays as US Freezes Immigrant Visa Appointments Worldwide

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has temporarily paused immigrant visa appointments worldwide as the United States prepares consular officers for stricter and more detailed screening of people seeking permanent residence.

The State Department said officers will undergo what it described as extensive training to improve the evaluation of immigrant visa applicants.

One of the central concerns is whether prospective immigrants could become dependent on US public benefits.

The latest action comes as the Trump administration continues to reshape America’s immigration system through tougher enforcement and screening measures.

The administration has argued that immigration policy should protect US taxpayers and ensure that people admitted to the country can support themselves financially.

The worldwide pause is expected to affect applicants at US embassies and consulates across multiple regions.

People who already had immigrant visa interviews scheduled have been told that appointments are being changed, with new dates expected to be issued later.  

The announcement follows an earlier series of restrictions targeting immigrant visa applicants from specific countries.

In January, the State Department announced a pause on immigrant visa issuances for nationals of 75 countries, including Nigeria, citing concerns about applicants potentially becoming dependent on US public benefits.  

That policy subsequently became the subject of legal challenges, and a federal judge later vacated the 75-country suspension.  

The latest worldwide action is broader in scope because it concerns immigrant visa appointments globally rather than being limited to a specific nationality list.

It remains unclear how long the new pause will last.

For prospective immigrants, the decision means another period of uncertainty as the United States reviews and strengthens its visa screening system.
