The Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army and Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested 12 people in a joint operation targeting an alleged illegal recruitment and training scheme.
The operation took place on August 31, 2026, at Uwa West, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The Nigerian Navy said the operation followed intelligence received by NNS Jubilee regarding a purported Nigeria Coast Guard Academy allegedly recruiting and training people as provisional cadets.
The joint security team comprised personnel of NNS Jubilee, Headquarters 2 Brigade/Operation Thunder, 6 Battalion of the Nigerian Army and the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Akwa Ibom Police Command.
The team raided the Merchant Seaman Academy, where the alleged recruitment and training activities were taking place.
Preliminary findings indicated that the recruitment exercise was not authorised or recognised under relevant laws and regulations.
Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, said the operation was prompted by concerns that unsuspecting Nigerians seeking opportunities in the maritime and security sectors could be deceived into parting with money or personal information.
The suspects included six suspected organisers or officials, five recruits or trainees and one cadet.
They were subsequently handed over to the police VCRU for further investigation and possible prosecution.
