FG Threatens Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road Closure Over Safety Violations

The Federal Government has threatened to shut the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway if motorists and other road users fail to comply with safety regulations.

Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, issued the warning during an inspection and briefing on the highway, saying authorities had observed several activities capable of endangering road users and damaging infrastructure.

According to Dare, motorists have been abusing the decision to open the first section of the highway to traffic while construction is still ongoing. He said some drivers have been travelling at speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour despite a 30 km/h limit.

The official said the speed restriction is necessary because construction work is still taking place along the route. He warned that motorists must obey the signs displayed on the highway.

The government also raised concerns about articulated trucks parking on the road for several days. Authorities said such vehicles would be targeted as part of the enforcement campaign.

Other activities facing restrictions include illegal U-turns, hawking, commercial motorcycle operations, tricycle operations, animal grazing and illegal settlements.

Vandalism has also become a major concern. Dare said approximately five kilometres of clear-view fencing had been removed, while manhole covers covering about 18 kilometres had also been vandalised and taken away.

The government said the removal of safety infrastructure could expose motorists and construction workers to additional risks.

Dare said authorities would intensify cooperation with the Lagos State Police Command. CCTV cameras are also being considered for the highway, while plans are underway to reorganise the coastal guard system.

The government has given road users two weeks to improve compliance. If authorities determine that there has been no significant improvement, Dare said the minister of works has directed officials to return and shut the road.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway remains under construction and forms part of the Federal Government’s broader infrastructure programme aimed at improving connectivity along Nigeria’s coastline.
