Babachir Lawal has joined the NDC as the party continues building its campaign structure ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress has received former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal as preparations for the 2027 general election continue.
Lawal was unveiled in Abuja on Tuesday and immediately declared support for the party’s presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The former SGF joined the NDC approximately three months after leaving the African Democratic Congress.
His resignation from the ADC followed the party’s presidential primary, which produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its candidate.
Lawal alleged that the primary had been manipulated in favour of Atiku.
Atiku’s camp rejected the allegation, maintaining its position on the conduct and outcome of the primary.
Lawal’s move to the NDC follows discussions with National Leader Seriake Dickson and other party leaders.
The meeting took place in Abuja shortly before the formal announcement of his membership.
The former SGF said Nigerians concerned about insecurity, hunger and other national challenges should support the NDC.
His comments came as the party continues to prepare for the 2027 electoral cycle.
The NDC has already attracted prominent politicians, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Obi and Kwankwaso joined the party earlier this year after leaving the ADC as part of the opposition political realignment.
The party is currently working on its campaign structures and has recently clarified the authority of its leadership over official campaign organs.
The NDC warned that individuals and support groups cannot independently constitute or announce campaign councils in the party’s name without approval from the National Working Committee.
Lawal’s entry comes as the party works to coordinate its political structures ahead of the election.
The former SGF has previously participated in opposition coalition activities and political discussions concerning the 2027 election.
His move from the ADC to the NDC is another indication of the continuing movement of political figures ahead of the next general elections.
The NDC will now proceed with its campaign preparations with Lawal as one of the latest senior political figures to join its ranks.
