Flood Alert: Ogun Government Warns Isheri, Arepo, Akute, Warewa, Others

The Ogun State Government has issued a fresh flood alert to communities considered vulnerable to flooding as the second phase of the 2026 rainy season approaches.

The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the warning followed NiMet’s forecast of heavy rainfall in Ogun and other parts of the country.

Oresanya said the second phase of the rainy season is expected to begin in September, with Ogun projected to record rainfall averaging about 360mm during the month.

He warned that prolonged rainfall, possible controlled overflow from Oyan Dam and tidal fluctuations could increase the risk of river and coastal flooding.

The commissioner explained that these conditions could affect the flow of the Ogun River and temporarily saturate wetlands and floodplains.

Residents in Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute and Warewa were therefore advised to remain vigilant and relocate to safer areas where necessary.

Parts of Abeokuta were also included in the warning.

The government extended the advisory to coastal communities in Ogun Waterside, including Makun-Omi, Iwopin, Oni, Ifaara and Igele.

Communities around Ebute-Imobi in Ijebu East, Tungeji Island and Agosasa in Ipokia, as well as areas along the Ilo and Iju rivers, were also advised to take precautions.

The commissioner urged residents to take the warning seriously and called on relevant authorities to strengthen flood monitoring and response measures.
