Borno: Zulum Suspends Traditional Leaders in Mallam-Fatori Over Absence, as Residents Return

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has ordered the immediate suspension of village and ward heads in Mallam-Fatori, the headquarters of Abadam Local Government Area, following their absence during his visit to the community.

Zulum issued the directive during his visit to Mallam-Fatori, where he inspected public infrastructure and assessed ongoing efforts to rebuild the community after years of disruption caused by the Boko Haram insurgency.

Mallam-Fatori, located in Borno’s northern border area, was among communities affected by the insurgency, which led to the displacement of residents and disruption of social and economic activities.

The governor expressed displeasure over the absence of the traditional leaders during his visit and directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Sugun Mele, to work with the Shehu of Borno on the appointment of new village and ward heads for the community.

Zulum said the new traditional leaders should be selected based on their integrity, competence and commitment to the community.

He also stressed the need for the traditional representatives to be able to work with residents, government authorities and security agencies as the community continues its recovery.

The development comes as efforts are being made to facilitate the return of residents to Mallam-Fatori following years of displacement linked to the insurgency.

During the visit, Zulum inspected infrastructure in the community and reviewed some of the facilities required to support residents as they return and rebuild their lives.

The governor subsequently directed the immediate construction of an Islamic education centre in Mallam-Fatori.

He also ordered the construction of primary and secondary schools to improve access to education for children in the community.

In addition, Zulum directed the establishment of a hospital to provide healthcare services to residents and support the growing population as more people return to the area.

The infrastructure directives are part of the state government’s efforts to provide basic services in communities affected by the insurgency and support their recovery.

Zulum also visited the 68 Battalion of the Nigerian Army stationed in Mallam-Fatori during his tour of the community.

The governor commended the soldiers for their efforts in maintaining security in the area, particularly as residents return to the community.

The presence of security personnel remains important to the return and resettlement process in communities that experienced prolonged disruption as a result of insurgency.

The suspension of the village and ward heads and the directive to begin the process of appointing new traditional representatives mark a leadership change in Mallam-Fatori as the community enters another phase of reconstruction and resettlement.

The governor directed the relevant authorities to commence the appointment process while work continues on infrastructure and other facilities needed by returning residents.
