Barcelona have completed their captaincy selection for the 2026/27 season, with Hansi Flick placing Raphinha and Pedri at the top of the club’s new leadership hierarchy.

Raphinha has been designated first captain, while Pedri will serve as second captain. Eric García, Frenkie de Jong and Lamine Yamal have been selected to complete the five-player group.

The structure was finalised after Barcelona had initially operated with a provisional arrangement.

Flick had named Raphinha, Pedri and García as provisional captains before the club’s squad was completely settled. The German coach had indicated that the final leadership structure would be determined once the squad situation was clearer and an internal vote could be conducted.

That process has now been completed.

Raphinha and Pedri were retained as the top two captains by Flick, while García, De Jong and Yamal were selected through the players’ vote.

The outcome gives Barcelona a captaincy group that combines established players with one of the youngest and most prominent members of the squad.

Raphinha’s promotion to first captain is significant because he had already been performing the role during the provisional period. Flick had trusted the Brazilian to represent the team during the early part of the season.

The forward has also become an important figure in Barcelona’s attack and has continued to play a central role under Flick.

Pedri’s appointment as second captain adds another established player to the top of the hierarchy.

The midfielder has been an important part of Barcelona’s team since his arrival and has become a key figure in the club’s midfield. His technical importance is matched by the growing leadership responsibility that comes with his new position.

García remains in the group after initially being chosen by Flick.

His continued presence is therefore consistent with the coach’s earlier decision and confirms that he remains an important leadership figure within the squad.

De Jong’s inclusion also gives the group an experienced midfielder who has previously held a captaincy role at Barcelona.

The biggest surprise is Yamal.

The 19-year-old has been voted into the leadership group despite being much younger than the other four players. His selection reflects the status he has already achieved within the team.

Yamal is no longer viewed simply as a promising academy graduate. He has become a regular attacking threat and one of the most important players in Barcelona’s squad.

His presence among the captains also illustrates the changing profile of Barcelona’s leadership.

The club’s leadership group now contains players from different generations, with experienced figures working alongside one of the most highly regarded young players in European football.

The captaincy structure is particularly important for Flick because Barcelona face a demanding schedule.

The Catalan club are competing in LaLiga while also preparing for European fixtures. The manager will need players capable of providing leadership during matches as well as within the dressing room.

The five-man structure gives him several options rather than concentrating leadership responsibility in one player.

The final decision also gives the players a direct role in choosing some of the individuals who will represent them.

Flick’s selection of Raphinha and Pedri establishes the hierarchy at the top, while the squad’s vote provides the remaining members.
