Ojota-Opebi Bridge: Sanwo-Olu Sets September Deadline After Delay

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has provided an update on the delayed opening of the Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge, saying the facility is expected to become accessible to motorists before September ends.

The bridge was officially commissioned on April 8, 2026, but has not yet opened for regular vehicular traffic. Senate President Godswill Akpabio represented President Bola Tinubu at the commissioning.

The project covers 5.04 kilometres and was developed to improve connectivity across one of Lagos’ busiest mainland corridors.

The new road link connects Opebi and Allen towards Ikorodu Road through Odo-Iya-Alaro and Mende. The state government expects it to provide an alternative for traffic moving around Ikeja, Maryland and Ojota.

Sanwo-Olu explained that the bridge could not immediately be opened because further work was required.

His latest indication that motorists will be able to use the bridge before the end of September provides a new target for the completion of the remaining preparations.

The project has attracted attention because its formal commissioning created an expectation that traffic operations would begin shortly afterwards.

That expectation was not immediately met.

A July report from the project site found workers and construction machinery still operating in sections of the development. The observation indicated that construction activities had continued more than three months after the official ceremony.

The bridge is one of the major infrastructure projects undertaken by the Lagos State Government under the Sanwo-Olu administration.

Its design includes provisions for pedestrians and cyclists, alongside solar streetlights and stormwater management facilities.

The state government has described the project as part of efforts to tackle traffic congestion and create better connections within the metropolis.

For commuters, the importance of the route lies in its potential to create another option for movement between Opebi, Allen, Mende, Maryland and Ojota.

The opening could also help reduce the concentration of traffic on existing routes serving the Ikeja axis.

The September timeline will therefore be closely watched by motorists and residents who have been waiting for the bridge to become operational.

The immediate priority for the state government is to complete the remaining work and ensure the facility is ready for safe and unrestricted traffic.
