INEC Breaks Silence on NDC Candidate Controversy Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission has denied replacing candidates submitted by the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 general elections.

The clarification comes amid concerns over the names appearing on the commission’s list of candidates for the forthcoming elections.

INEC said it did not substitute candidates submitted by the political party, rejecting claims that the commission independently replaced some NDC nominees with other names.

The development comes as political parties continue preparations for the 2027 elections and work through the processes of selecting, submitting and publishing their candidates.

The issue of candidate substitution has attracted increased attention ahead of the elections, with political parties expected to follow the prescribed nomination and submission procedures.

The NDC has previously faced disputes over candidate selection and the release of primary election results in some states.

The party’s internal processes have also generated public discussion as its candidates prepare for the 2027 polls.

INEC’s clarification is expected to address concerns over the commission’s role in the publication of candidate information.

The commission remains responsible for receiving and publishing candidate information submitted by registered political parties in accordance with the electoral process.

The 2027 general elections are expected to feature candidates from several political parties competing for various elective positions across the country.
