Boehly Leaves Chelsea Chairman Role After Clearlake Buyout

Chelsea’s ownership structure has been reshaped after Clearlake Capital acquired the stakes held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, giving the private equity firm full control of the club.

The transaction was confirmed by Chelsea on Wednesday and brings an end to the previous ownership arrangement.

Boehly, who served as chairman, will leave his position.

Walter will also exit the club’s ownership group, while Hansjörg Wyss remains involved as a stakeholder.

Clearlake had been the majority shareholder since the 2022 takeover and held 61.5 per cent before the latest transaction.

The firm now controls the club outright.

The change follows months of reports about differences within the ownership structure, including discussions over the club’s long-term direction and infrastructure plans.

Chelsea has nevertheless said there will be no immediate changes to day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy.

Boehly’s departure closes his direct involvement in the ownership of a club whose transfer spending became one of the defining features of the post-2022 period.

Chelsea committed more than £1bn to transfers during the early years of the new ownership, while also investing in academy and training infrastructure.

The club said its ownership group had made substantial investments across the men’s and women’s teams and player development.

Boehly said he was confident that Chelsea was positioned for continued success under Clearlake.

The private equity firm’s co-founders said they would continue investing in the club’s infrastructure and sporting operation.

The transaction also comes at an important point on the football side.

Xabi Alonso is beginning his first season as Chelsea manager, while the club currently sits sixth in the Premier League after four matches.

Chelsea’s next league fixture is against Brentford.

The immediate operational message from Stamford Bridge is continuity.

The longer-term significance is that decisions about Chelsea’s ownership and direction will now be concentrated under Clearlake, ending the shared structure that existed since the 2022 takeover.
